I received this email from Prudent Patriot of Austin, Texas, even before we announced our plans:

Y’all do know, don’t you, that the public is banned from attending Obama’s 3,588th Health Care Rally in St Louis tomorrow…???
All the more reason that the good people from St Lou’s TEA community  need to protest outside the event, and do whatever possible to have the local TV/Radio cover this blacked out event w/ our nation’s highest ranked public servant…

We in the St. Louis Metro area are PROUD to be called upon, once again, to state our case—that our children have a right to self-government, to pursue happiness on their own terms, to live free and honorable lives according to their best judgment.  Once again, we in the heartland have the opportunity tell this President and his comrades McCaskill and Carnahan that we intend to keep our freedom—that  if the people are unfit to rule their own lives, who among us is fit to rule someone else?

We Expect to be Heard

At the times and places described below and in other places on this site, we will gather as free men and women to tell this President, a servant by law and a ruler in his own imagination, that our will trumps his on all matters of domestic policy.  We will express our disgust at his rude ignorance of our desires.  We will politely ask him to shut up for once and listen to the people.

We Will Conduct Ourselves with Honor

With the eyes of America on St. Louis, we grassroots conservatives will, again, display behavior that our parents and our children will be proud of.  We will not bait those who disagree with us, and we will not respond to their taunts. We will, as always, support the St. Louis Police Department and other law enforcement officers who are risking their lives to protect the President and us.  They will, I am confident, treat us all fairly. And we should all return the favor.

We Will Surround Them

In addition to the email from Texas, patriots from Salem, Springfield, Alton, and Quincy, Illinois, have committed to making the trip to St. Louis, some promising to attend ALL events during the day.  We have friends from as far as Springfield in Missouri who are making the trek to St. Charles and St. Louis.  We will be on KTVI Fox 2 tomorrow in the 7:00 a.m. hour to talk about our mission for today.

Please Join Us

First Event: Rep. Todd Akin has done a great job putting together a rally at the St. Charles Convention Center starting at 9:45 a.m. This rally will include some of Congress’s staunches defenders of freedom via satellite, and many Missouri conservative leaders will be speaking locally.  RiteOn.org has a great story on this event.

Second Event:  President Obama will be at St. Charles High School at 3:30 p.m. I do not know if anyone’s put together a demonstration, so if you know of one, please put the details in the comments.

Grand Finale:  The Renaissance Hotel downtown. 5:00 to about 7:00 p.m. For those who’ve responded to the call for volunteers,  Thank you.  I tried to reply to everyone who’s emailed that they’ll be there, but I just ran out of time. We also want as many people as possible with signs to demonstrate our values and dreams for keeping America great, prosperous, and free.  So grab your signs and Gadsden Flags.  I have not received instructions on locations from the St. Louis Police Department, but please assemble in the area they designate.  The other side will also have a designated protest area.  We don’t want another incident like Carnahan’s town hall in August.

Just spoke to Congressman Akin. He is sponsoring a Healthcare Rally at  St. Charles Convention Center (map, directions, parking) to house Healthcare Rally at 10:00 Wednesday, March 10.

Congressman Akin want us to set a FREEDOM-LOVING TONE for President Obama’s visit to raise money for Claire McCaskill from limousine liberals.

Let’s fill the auditorium and parking lot.  Send Obama the message:  KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY HEALTHCARE!!!!

Obama will be at the Renaissance downtown on Wednesday evening to raise money for Claire McCaskill and Russ Carnahan.

President Obama will tell the American people that his opinion trumps their collective opinion tomorrow when he endorses the Nuclear Option in the Senate to force unwanted Step One of Socialize Medicine down our throats.

He will call for an up or down vote, as has happened in the past, and though he won’t use the word reconciliation, he’ll make it clear that if they’re not given an up or down vote, Democrats will use the reconciliation rules.

Did we spend the entire month of August sweltering in Russ “Can’t Read” Carnahan’s SEIU love-fests for nothing? 

NO!

We did it to lay the foundation for the most dramatic change in Congressional make-up since the first Congress convened on March 4, 1789.  We did because “a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation” from 100 or so Representatives and Senators, some of whom have never worked outside of government.

A growing list of candidates, mostly Republican and mostly closely allied with the Tea Party and 9-12 movements, are vowing to make repeal of ObamaCare their number one focus in 2011.  That means, if a Tea Party Caucus forms in Washington next year, NOTHING GETS TO THE FLOOR before healthcare is repealed.  (At least, that’s my interpretation of “number one priority.”) 

So don’t get mad.  Don’t say things you’ll regret.  Just find a great candidate or candidates and do WHATEVER IT TAKES to get those people elected.

The government (Census Bureau, to be specific) reported yesterday that consumer spending rose 0.5 percent in January.  The report was designed to give the White House’s failed economic policy some cover. But the number is bogus, and Mike Shedlock (Mish) explains precisely why:  same store sales.

Government methodology for reporting retail sales is based on sampling stores in existence. It does not factor in stores not in existence but recently were. Nor does it handle closed stores when the chain is still doing business.  Government reporting of retail sales is fatally flawed. To understand what is going on, all one has to look at actual tax data. Heard any rosy numbers from states about sales tax collections?

Say a neighborhood had 3 grocery stores last year.  Two closed because of the recession, leaving one to serve, say 999 families. Even if each of those families buys only half what they did last year, the remaining store’s sales will show a 66 percent increase in same store sales.  In reality, there was a 50 percent drop in spending, but the government can’t compute that.

Let’s go back to Mish’s state sales tax analysis.  Mish points to New York, Indiana, Texas, and Tennessee. Each state shows a sharp decline in sales tax revenue year over year.  People are spending less at fewer remaining stores, inflating the same store sales data.

Until merchants stop closing locations faster than they open new ones, the government will continue to overstate consumer spending.

David Cameron, very possibly Britain’s next Prime Minister, argues that the nature of government is about to change. Margaret Thatcher famously said that socialism inevitable depletes “other people’s money.” Cameron reports that it already has, pointing to cavernous public debt in the U.S., UK, and Europe as evidence.

But Cameron goes further than many U.S. politicians, approaching a top I like to discuss on the stump: the pursuit of happiness. In this TED talk, Cameron lays a sound foundation upon which we can build a conversation about making life better without government. 

Some in the Tea Party movement will point out that we already know how to make a better world by reducing government’s role.  Fine.  We understand that.  But many other don’t.  We need to be able to describe that better world and paint a path to its door.

BONUS: Guess what he holds up to the world as the best example of government transparency?

The St. Louis Tea Party will celebrate the one year anniversary of the tea party movement on Saturday, February 27 at 1:30 p.m. on the steps of the Arch.

One year ago that day in cities across the country Americans answered Rick Santelli’s call to protest against excessive taxes, wasteful spending, and irresponsible government. Fifteen-hundred citizens stood under the Arch and the St. Louis Tea Party was born.

Since that time the St. Louis Tea Party has emerged as one of the preeminent and most active tea party organizations. Their April 15, 2009 Tax Day Tea Party drew 10,000 people to Keiner Plaza;  area tea partiers have participated in town halls, various rallies, have organized petitions and “buycotts.” The tea party movement is credited for victories in New Jersey, Virginia, Massachusetts, New York’s 23rd district, and stalled such government grabs as a faulty health care reform bill and cap-and-trade.

The St. Louis Tea Party will start promptly at 1:30 p.m. and end at 2:30 p.m., rain or shine. Participants will hear from a small group of speakers before dumping tea leaves (please remove from, and properly dispose of, all bags) into the Mississippi River. No pitchforks. Signs cannot have sticks/poles. Parking is available on the cobblestone for $4 or attendees can use Arch parking. More information can be found at www.stlouisteaparty.com.

The best investigative journalism in Missouri is done at 24thstate.com. Recently, the editor and his document parties revealed a slimy relationship between Secretary of State Robin Carnahan and ACORN’s Project Vote, the discredited criminal enterprise so favored by Barack Obama.

It seems that Carnahan used state resources to help an ACORN front group win a law suit against Missouri.

Since that’s a remarkable revelation, I’ll repeat:  Secretary of State Robin Carnahan used your Missouri tax dollars to help a criminal enterprise sue YOU.

It is this familiarity which is the issue.  Starting with Mindy, and moving on to Ron and Betsy, we see a willingness to go above and beyond normal duties to provide Project Vote with what they needed to sue the state of Missouri.  The Secretary of State’s office, rather than working to protect the state, clearly sets up the other agencies, and then repeatedly provides the documentation requested by Project Vote.

Considering that 24thstate has provided all of the documents supporting these allegations, it’s time for the U.S. Attorney, Richard G. Callahan, to begin a federal criminal investigation of the Secretary of State’s office. It seems appropriate, too, for Carnahan to take a leave of absence until these allegation are either substantiated or disproven. Looking at the depth and breadth of the documentary evidence, though, it looks really bad for Carnahan.

Oh, an the Democrats might want to start vetting U.S. Senate candidates.  Just in case.

On a conference call tonight I heard a woman from New York State cry. She cried because she feels left out of the most important citizens uprising in 200 years in America.  She feels left out because, in her view, the Republicans who run in her part of New York are no more conservative than the Democrats.  She envies those of us in more balanced or conservative places.

Well, 2010 is the year that every American conservative can change the course of history.

We on the right sometimes let our love of federalism cloud our view of what’s really happened to the balance of power between states and the U.S. government.  In recent years, our myopia has led many of us to ignore important races where we don’t have a vote.  We even criticize “outside influence” on elections. I was personally criticized for wasting time and energy on a race in New York’s 23rd District last fall when there were races right here in St. Louis, albeit 13 months away. 

What the critics missed—what i missed for a long time—is that American politics changed.  Somewhere along the way, we reached the point at which my representation was less important than the aggregate in Congress.  Because the United States government has so overwhelmed the federalist system, our acting as if federalism were still the order of the day serves only to advance statism.  In other words, we need to grow up and deal with the world as it exists.

Does this mean local doesn’t matter?  No. It means that your local race is not more important than the national election as a whole.  It means that you don’t get to sit-out this election just because your congressional district is uncontested and your U.S. Senators are not up this year.  If that’s the case, then you owe it to your fellow Americans to jump into some other contested race as if it were your own.  It means that you owe it to your children to support a candidate in another district or another state. 

Mark Skoda, President of Ensuring Liberty and leader in the Memphis Tea Party, recently pointed out that Scott Brown’s election tipped the balance of power for people in all 50 states and the territories.  To pretend that race was about Massachusetts only was to ignore the reality of American government. Scott Brown’s win will effect your life as much or more as a U. S. Senate race in your own state. 

In 2010, voters will decide 435 House and 37 Senate races .  Many of these races are either uncontested, solid Democrat or solid Republican. (Check here: House | Senate).  Conservatives need to win a majority of these races.  We do not have to win any one race in particular

For example, I hear from many people who are concerned about the U. S. Senate race in Missouri.  People feel cheated by the current Republican field. At the same time, voters don’t want Missouri to send two hard left Democrats to the U.S. Senate. I understand.  I don’t want my home state to have two leftists in the U.S. Senate, either.  But if those liberal Democrats are members of the Senate’s minority instead of the majority, I can live with it.  Again, we have to win the majority of the races; we don’t have win any one race in particular. 

Ensuring Liberty PAC gives Tea Partiers and other conservatives the opportunity to support conservative candidates in critical races anywher in the country. ELPAC is managed by local Tea Party leaders who want to use Scott Brown’s campaign as a model for directing scarce dollars and activists to the right campaign at the right time with the right tools.  For those who live in districts or states without key races, ELPAC gives you a chance to change the way the next 2 years turn out. It’s your key to changing history.

So let’s stop pretending that the states still have a voice as loud as the Founders intended.  They don’t.  The U.S. government has muzzled the states.  By considering 2010 and 2012 national elections, we can begin restoring a real balance between the states and the government in Washington. This year, you have more political power than ever before if you choose to exercise it. Ensuring Liberty PAC is one way to maximize your advantage.

For some reason, my dad made a big deal out of Valentine’s Day every year.  Even when I was in high school, he’d buy all us kids a big, heart-shaped box of candy. For a few years, we’d go to a restaurant on Chipawa for their anniversary special of filet mignon and champagne.  I’ve never asked my dad why Valentine’s Day was so special to him.  I don’t intend to, either. Actions speak louder than words. 

This year, I decided to copy Dad.  Sort of.  The last few years haven’t been so great for us financially, even before I got swept up into the Tea Party movement.  But I decided to make sure each of the kids had a box of Fanny May chocolates this morning.  I also decided to stay away from the computer most of the day, and to avoid long conference calls about politics. 

Seth Godin wrote about starting our own holidays today.  He must be in the same mood I am.  That’s good to know.  I believe that God and earth give off rhythms. If we’re lucky and attentive, we pick them up.  It’s not that Seth and I think alike.  It’s that we quiet ourselves at the same time sometimes.  And listen. And we write about what we hear even if it’s a little too revealing for our comfort.

St. Valentine was, according to Sr. Mary Mark, O.P.,  a prisoner who preached the Word by writing on heart-shaped leaves that he could snatch through the bars of a small window in his cell.  He wrote messages of God’s undying love for His creatures.  Love even for wretches locked up in prison cells to rot and die. Valentine’s crime involved helping Christians to marry, which was against Roman law under Claudius II. Valentine was later beaten and beheaded for his faith.

I believe that God wished his creatures to be free to love and honor Him according to our own ideas in accordance with His teachings.  I believe God rewards us for helping our brothers and sisters in need, but only if our charity comes from our own generosity.  Charity at the point of a gun is neither freely given nor freely received.  Such redistribution is not of God but of man. It is, therefore, defective.  A penny of true charity is worth more than a fortune coerced.  Government poverty programs built on taxes corrupt the souls of all involved, especially the poor.  Can a government really clean the stain of sin from the money it steals?  The end does not justify the means.

As we step into the Christian Lenten season, today being Dominica in Quinquagesima,  let’s remember that the “pursuit of Happiness” is the pursuit of the good that gives us satisfaction.  It is the highest aspiration in life, not the lowest. I hope that all I’ve done and all we do in this movement are done out of love, not fear. While fear and anger may awaken us, love must animate our actions, just as the Holy Spirit gives true life to our otherwise profane bodies.

My dad told us each “I love you” with a simple act each February 14, but he lives his love for his wife and children every day, now well into his eighties.  I wish I were so full of love.  I wish I could live up to his legacy.
